Fans can be loyal or fickle, rabid or lukewarm. They might dress like their favorite athlete or musician, scream and shout when he or she is nearby, but most likely, stop thinking about the object of their enthusiasm soon after that idol moves on.
Followers are in for the long haul. They study the person, learn all they can, pattern their lives after the one they follow. Their loyalty goes more than jersey-deep.
Jesus had fans. They shouted, acted the part and as quickly turned away. His followers, different story. They stayed true to him after the cross, through threats and persecution and even death. No backing down. Right on to today.
Be a follower. Study Jesus. Pay attention to what he says, what he’s like, how he handled things. Hang out with others who aren’t afraid to call themselves his followers. It won’t always be easy. But in the end, he’s the winner. The star. The MVP. He’s very worth following.
