“Ha-zehl me abru, scotty.”

2016 09 08 - Star TrekIf you can read that, you already know it was 50 years ago tonight that America first met Captain Kirk and crew aboard the Starship Enterprise, on a mission to boldly go where no man has gone before. NBC launched a weekly sci-fi program on Sept. 8, 1966, (Stardate 6609.08), little knowing it was launching conferences, costumes and catch-phrases, Vulcan language courses, a movie franchise and a nerve grip. Tonight culminates a 100-city orchestra tour and Trekkie gatherings galore, celebrating this golden anniversary.

One can take two tacks on all this.

Tack A – heed the words of William Shatner in a 1986 Saturday Night Live skit, in which he addresses a fanatical group of Trekkies: “ … for crying out loud, it’s just a TV show! I mean, look at you, look at the way you’re dressed! You’ve turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME!”

Tack B – go with it. Wear pointy ears. Study Vulcan. Dif-tor heh smusma. (Live long and prosper.)

Just remember that it’s all sci-fi fun and games. Truly prosperous life is found only in Jesus. He’s the real sa-te’kru. (King).
